How many of you have ventured into the world of “all natural” or “organic” or non toxic products and found that product flat out didn’t work?
Now raise your hand if that product was deodorant.
If this is you, I feel ya, friend! I’ve been there and done that with a variety of different safer products and I’ve learned a lot of lessons along the way. But if you’re someone who tried and tossed in the towel after deodorant, you need to be like Cher and believe in life after love.
I swear deodorant is the number one question I get from women considering switching to safer products. I think people are pretty aware that antiperspirant is no bueno—and if you DON’T or wanna know more check out this post I did last fall—and so it seems like a no brainer for a place to start wading in the waters.
And in the same breath I would say “DON’T DO IT!” Don’t start with deodorant! And here’s why:
We all have a different body chemistry. And finding the right deodorant can be a bit like finding the right skincare regimen, there isn’t a one size fits all. Some of us have sweaty armpits, some of us have normal armpits, some of us have some mega stank, some of us have surprisingly sensitive skin. Bet you’ve never really thought “how sensitive are my armpits?” And if you haven’t it’s because you’ve never broken out in a full on unexplainable rash that’s turning south into a yeast infection. Because newsflash, folks, YOU CAN GET A YEAST INFECTION IN YOUR ARMPITS! And it hurts like a motha and it’s embarrassing and you’re probably not gonna have many friends who can empathize.
I’ve seen it happen time and time again, deodorant is a falling off point for a lot of women who would otherwise be on board with making some changes in their daily routine. It’s like deodorant fails you one time and you’re all “Forget that! Products that are safer for me don’t work!”
And this seriously bums me out, because you guys, our personal care products are chock full of ingredients that are wreaking havoc on our health! And we’re willingly allowing them into our daily routines multiple times a day. It’s also one of the areas you have 100% control over and therefore one of the easiest ways for you to reduce your exposures to toxic ingredients.
So please, don’t throw in the towel just because you had a few stinky (literally!) days at the gym or the office.
I know this process can seem really complicated and overwhelming, and if you don’t know what you’re doing, you can flush a lot of cash money down the toilet trying products that don’t work. Trust me! I’ve been there and it’s better my husband DOESN’T know how many dollars I’ve spent trying to find the perfect deodorant.
At the end of the day, the deodorant situation paints a crystal clear picture to people like me. Safer doesn’t matter if it doesn’t work! Nobody wants to be the smelly kid! And it’s why in everything I do you won’t just find “safer” you’ll also find “this might actually work better than what I was already using!”
I’m focused on healthier living from the inside out and giving women the tools they need in order to do that in the most pain free and easy way possible. I regularly share my favorite products on my various social media platforms, so if you aren’t already, make sure you’re following along. But if you’re someone who wants the full rundown on the tried and true products that WORK you’re gonna wanna sign up for my upcoming course Safer Simplified where I’m taking women on a journey through their whole home and helping them clean things up from the kitchen to the bathroom and all the in betweens. In week two of the course you’ll get my list of favorite products along with the 411 on what to avoid and WHY, a bunch of resources for finding safer products and ultimately direct access to me to ask questions about what’s good and what’s not. I’ll also drop a link for you to check that baby out a bit more. Read the details and sign up! It’s gonna be a ton of fun!
And before I leave ya I’ll give a quick tip on where you SHOULD start when it comes to safer products. Switch out things where you don’t need a bunch of customization or your expectations for performance are lower so you can kind of ease yourself in. Think hand soaps, lotion, body wash, bar soap. These products will help build your confidence while also swapping out some of the things you use every day multiple times a day, therefore reducing your exposures. And think about your munchkins because their developing systems make them especially susceptible to toxic chemical ingredients. I love the Beautycounter’s kids line in a major way. It lasts forever, it lathers and spreads amazingly, and the scent is fantastic.
That’s all I’ve got for you today. But you guys know I love hearing from you, so tell me honestly, did you try an all natural deodorant and decide safer products just aren’t your thing? Do you have a horror story like my armpit yeast infection? Would love to hear from you guys in the comments!
Have a beautiful day!
